This church is in a somewhat remote location but is frequented by tour buses as a splendid example of the Stave church building technique.  Some of the wood used  here has been dated back to 1150.

"The Lom stave church was a busy church in the Middle Ages and the people of the village shared it with all the pilgrims traveling through Lom.  These came either from the west of Norway on the way to Nidaros (Trondheim) or from the east on the way to the monastery of St. Sunniva on Selje. The Black Death, as disastrous plague, in 1349 put a sudden end to this busy medieval life.  The church remained unchanged for nearly 300 years in a period of depression when both human and economic resources were lacking."  [Lom Stave church - a short story, Lom Stave church 2016, in English]

The Reformation in 1608 changed the church from Catholic to Lutheran.   Elements of Catholicism were removed.  Rather extensive remodeling was done in the 17 century.  The church received a new organ in 1907 donation from emigrants to America.  [Lom Stave church - a short story, Lom Stave church 2016, in English]
