The following history of the family is quite different from what has been published by other researchers, in particular that is listed in the LDS computer research records. Bruce Ballenger, the main researcher on this line with his book Ballengers of Tryon and A Ballenger Genealogy, stated that he believe that Edward Ballenger, may be our ancestor In emails 5/18/23. " I believe our Francis is the son of Edward who named a Francis in his 1779 Culpepper will. I do have a copy of the will." Ballenger stated. This is still speculation and is not back with other documents discovered to date. He and I are hoping to find such a source for the family linkage and look forward to corresponding with anyone with firm information.

To date no records have been found to connect Francis Ballenger (b. abt 1720) to the Francis Ballenger in Prince Georges Co., Maryland in 1699. This earlier Francis and his wife Judith on the rolls of St. Mary's Church, Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's Co., Maryland had a son John (b. abt 1703) and Richard (b. abt 1706) either of which could be the father of our Francis (b. abt 1720). [Ballenger p. 59]

1769, Mar 17 - Francis and his son James leased 160 acres of land from George Washington of Fairfax Co., Virginia.
[Deed Book 3, p. 490, Fauquier Co,. VA]

Francis and his family moves to Spartanburg Co., South Carolina. before 1800. [Ballenger. p.29]

1784, June 6 - Edward Ballinger buys 587 acres of land in Greenville Co., South Carolina. [Ballenger. p.29]

1787, Mar 16- Francis (the father) had received a grant for 300 acres on the Pacolet River , sold in 1788.[Ballenger. p.29]

1789 - Edward sells 274 acres land to Henry Machen. Henry had married Frances, Edward's sister. [Greenville Co., South Carolina] [Ballenger. p.29]

1798- Jan. 13- At about the age of 50, James acquired 200 acres on the North Fork of the Tyger River. "an area in which Edward purchased land in 1799 and 1800, John had purchased land here in 1802 and 1807....The area is west of the city of Spartanburg and at the northern edge of the town of Wellford.
[Ballenger. p.29]

1814 - James dies. At this time there were a total of 1900 acres owned by Edward, James and John. (probable son to James) [Ballenger. p.29]
