This connection with Ireland is under constant investigation.  I use this page to keep track of my findings.  I do believe that the original Scottish family of Burns or Burnes was forced, like so many other Scottish families, to move to Northern Ireland due to religious conviction or political opposition to the King of England from as early as the 1600's.  It is likely, in my opinion, that a segment of the family emigrated along with other Irish Protestant to the colonies, in particular to the area of South Carolina before 1800.  Obviously many Burns families left many descendants in each region in which they lived.

Records exist in North Ireland of an number of Burns.

The list of Burns in South Carolina only shows that there were many Burns here before 1800.  I have no records of which families are connected.  Wills are lacking among these people unless they had slaves. Since most didn't have slaves, inheritance to their estates were handled quietly and frequently without records.

John Burne has a plat for 1000 acres on the Altamaha River.  5/18/1763  [S.C. archives.]
