1857- his mother dies at his age of six.
1859- his father remarries, Imogene Clyde, she has a child "Willie" 6 Mar, 1860, he assists his father on the plantation until the outbreak of the Civil War. [Goodspeed]
1861- His two older adopted brothers enlist in Confederate Army on May 20, 1861. James M., the oldest one is killed within the first three months in Richmond, VA. [Confederate records of Ark.]
1863- His cousin and adopted brother, Porter M. L. , may have been killed this year. John D. assumes the running the plantation with his father.
1870- his father James Lee Hollaway dies and the age of 57. he inherits 300 acres from his father's estate and adds another 200 later. [Goodspeed]
1883- John marries Lizzie Whitesides.[Ashley Co Marriages - 1849-1910]
1885- An early mercantile business was owned by Cammack & Jackson, John D. Hollaway buys out Jackson's part. [DeArmond. p19]
1886 -He bought out Cammack Mercantile in Portland, AR [Goodspeed] 1887- John bought out Cammack's share to become sole owner [Goodspeed]
By the late 1800's he as carrying stock of $1500 and grossing $8000 - $10,000 annually. His main business was outfitting the plantations with supplies. [DeArmond. p19]
1889- February 6, John marries Sallie E. Austin [Ashley Co Marriages - 1849-1910] ? James Lee born to John and Sallie (Austin) Sallie E., mother of 5 but only 2 survive as of 1900 [US Census.1900]

cooking."

1892- John's brother is operating a store of his own as A. P. Hollaway & Co., general merchants. [DeArmond. p25]
1893- Fire takes out many stores in Portland including "Mrs. Hollaway millenary store." [DeArmond. p30] I have no idea which Mrs. Hollaway this may have been. EC
1898, Oct - Frank Hazzard had opened a saloon in Portland. Frank had married John's sister, Martha (Hollaway) Turner. [DeArmond. p39]
1902, Aug. - fire started in the grocery store of Frank Hazzard(brother-in-law to John D.)and spread to the Matthews Hotel. [DeArmond. p30]
