The original building for this region was a stave church, of which,
few still exist in Norway.
(see the Ringebu Stavkyrkje) This church is said to be the
oldest Medieval Church in Norway. It is listed as a national
landmark for preservation. This church and land were
established by Catholic order on a hill outside of town. They
became Lutheran after the Reformation about 1534. The churches
of this region almost always had a farm in association with the
church. The farm was used by the priests to support themselves
since no pay was given. They usually had a number of families
who occupied several smaller houses on the property that worked on
the farm. They may also have a person or two who may be
charity cases, normally very old or sick who couldn't take care of
themselves. This kind of social responsibility was also part
of the culture on most of the big farms.
My relative Ole Christensen was 31 years old and living with
his sister and mother on this farm with two other households in the
1801 census.
