There were numerous members of the Roney families in Henry
Co., Alabama and several of them migrated to Arkansas with the Terry,
Kirkland and Spann families about 1870 - 1880. The family roots
are still somewhat mysterious but early records seem to indicate that
they first immigrated from Ireland then to Virginia, next to North
Carolina, South Carolina. They show up in Alabama about
1830 shortly after the territory opens up. The spelling variation
also present a complication to doing research since we find the as
Ronie, Ronny, Rony, Ronney, Rany, Raney, Ramey, etc.

We are unsure about the labeling of
these photos. The boy child I believe is Forrest Kirkland based
on his photo about the same year on Warren Kirkland's page.
Elijah P. Roney was a member of the RFD (Rural Free Delivery) system of
the United States Post Office. This was a new service in 1896 in
Arkansas, otherwise people would have to go to the local post office to
pick up their mail. This photo could be from 1899-1900. If
this is Elijah Roney, he may be a younger brother to Nancy(Roney)
Kirkland, who married Elijah Kirkland. If the dates are correct
to the 1880 census he should be 37 and he is obviously near 50
here.
1900 - US Census - Ashley Co., Roll 49 page 163 - Nancy is here with
her son, Leroy. Hugh Roney is an apparent nephew. I still don't
know if we have the correct family here.
