The earliest record of Philip Sherwood is a notation in the Old
Rappahannock
Co., Virginia order Book 1, (1683-1686), pp. 173-174. Although
this record lays out the girls of the family it does not give us a
wife's name. It also doesn't give a father's name.
4 September 1685: Whereas Philip Sherwood late of this County
dyed
seized and possessed in Fee of a certain tract of Land lying and being
on the north side of [the] Rappahannock River in the freshes therof
which
said land doth now lawfully come and Vest in Mary, Martha, Sarah,
and
Ann
the four daughters & coheirs of the said Philip Sherwood and
whereas Thomas Marshall who marryed Sarah one of the said
coheirs did
in right
of his wife bring this action in this Court against Francis James
who
marryed Mary the Eldest of the said daughters and shows that
the sd.
James did
marry contrary to law and without the mutual consent of the said
Sisters
and coheirs make division of the Land aforesaid. But it evidently made
appear that Mary and Martha the two eldest daughters of the sd
Philip
Sherwood
were of full age and did Consent to the division of the land and
seriously
weighing the matter have ordered that the division of the sd land
already
made to continue good and firme untill such time as the youngest Sister
daughter of the sd Philip Sherwood shall move for a new division
thereof.
[Old Rappahanock Co., VA , order Book 1, (1683-1686), pp. 173-174]
This last record shows that John Marshall actually married Sarah
Sherwood although many researchers have listed Martha Jane Sherwood as
his wife. John Marshall is not married to Jane Pendleton
according to researchers of these documents. He may have married
Martha Jane Sherwood at a later date after his first wife dies because
his will lists Martha as the wife. There are many documents that
connect David Rossier with a marriage to a Sherwood. Headley,
states in Marriages of Northern
Neck.... that David marries Sarah Sherwood. It seems
that one way or the other John Marshall marries a Sherwood but the
sequence is confusing. Is there more than one Sarah Sherwood or
more than one John Marshall?
1688, Nov 23 - David Rossier of Sittenburne Parish, Rappahannock
Co.,
VA
and his wife Sarah Rossier, sold to Francis James the land formerly
belonging
to Philip Sherwood deceased. The whole property was situated in the
Parish
of Sittenburne adjoing in the land of William Jett.
1698/9- James Dabney's daughter Welthan is baptised, 8 Jan.
1698/9. [Vestry Book of St. Peter's Parish, p. 349]
1701- James Dabney is given "204 acres of land lying & being in St.
John's parish with Pamunkey neck in King and Queen County bounded thus
beginning on the North Side of Pamunkey river at ye mouth of Pounce
Swamp....for transportation of 4 persons into this colony.. "
James Dabney is said to be the son of
Cornelius Dabney "The Indian Interpreter". Cornelius Dabney
emigrated to Virginia about 1660. He is said to have been a negotiator
and interpreter between the British authorities and Cockacoeske, queen
of the Pamunkey Indians and widow of Chief Totopotomoi, a grandson of
the sister of chief Powhatan, the father of Pocahontas.
In 1679 the Pamunkey Indians lease six to seven hundred acres to
Cornelius Dabney for ninety-nine years. [Dabney, Wm. Henry.]
The Dabney family is known as French Huguenots. "The traditions
all say that they descended from that fearless Huguenot
leader, Agrippa d'Aubigné, who flourished from 1550 to 1630.
Agrippa
was not the first of his name known at the French court. According to
tradition in the family, a d'Aubigné was at the court of Louis
XII. He
commanded a company of Swiss guards. Agrippa d'Aubigné wrote a
very
interesting history of the fearless times in which he lived-one of the
best that has come down to us. Agrippa was the grandfather of Mme. de
Maintenon." [One World. Ancestry.com]
1715, Apr 6 - David Rossier Jr. sold land which formerly
belonged to
Philip Sherwood, decd., out of Coleman's Patent, which descende unto
Philip
Sherwood's four daughters to Francis James of Sittenburne Parish,
Richmond
county. David had inherited the land from his mother's part of the
estate.
1717, Oct 24 - The Will of Francis James gives his wife's name as
"Margaret" although he seems to be married to Mary Sherwood.
Proved in Sittingbourne Parish, King George's Co., VA. on 7 July
1721. He names a son Sherwood James who had not been 21 years of
age on 24 oct 1717. Francis James is also mentioned about fifty acres
"I bought of my sister-law Mrs Martha Marshall." He named his
wife"Margaret" James as his executrix. The will was witnessed by
Peter Jett and John Gilbert.
