1860 - She apparently was born on the Waterford side of Carrick-on-Suir.  At this particular place in Ireland the city was divided by the river Suir but also three counties come together- Waterford, Tipperary and Kilkenny.  The Waterford side is the poor side of town and could have been one of the reasons for her immigration.

Records for Ireland are particularly difficult to research.  The Irish census records were burned by the British in 1921 and Catholic church records will not be released to anyone other than a relative.  They are often only recorded in the parish church in Latin and it is necessary to have the Christian name of the relative and help of the parish priest to do the research.

The family believes that there was a possible brother and perhaps more siblings that remained in Ireland.  We are still trying to build this family record.
  Cobh statue
This statue is near the port of Cobh, County Cork, Ireland celebrating the emigration of so many Irish during the Potatoe Famine. The old name for the port was Queenstown.  This was where Catherine and her sisters had to have departed from.  This is also the last port of call for the Titanic before is went down.

1882 - Catherine (sometimes Katherine) Connally immigrates to the United States.  She is not naturalized in the 1900 census.

1882, Mar. 20 - Catherine Connally is on the ships manifest for the Batavia at age 18.  She arrives at the port of New York from Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland.   Queenstown is now known as Cobh, pronounced Cove,  in County Cork and is the main port of departure for emigrates from Ireland.   Her sister, Mary, is with her at age 21.

Ellen Griffen shows up on the 1900 census in Lead, South Dakota living with Katherine and John Rochford.   Also in this census in Ann Connally listed as a sister-in-law who is single.   This 1900 census also says that Katherine and Anna came over in 1892 and Ella came in 1882.  Ella is said to have been married 19 years, had 3 children and none living.   Her husband is not listed and a family rumor was that he may have gone off on the Alaska gold rush and never was heard of again.   Anna may be the sister that never married and came over with Katherine listed as a Mary on the manifest.

1900 - US Census, Lead, Lawrence Co., South Dakota,.  John is listed as laborer in a mine.

Email correspondence from Frances Petrowski, Apr 20 2007
"I can answer a couple of your questions off the top of my head.  We to have not found alot out on the Connolly's.  The common name is a factor.  Ellen was Catherine Connolly's younger sister. Yes Aunt Emmy, my grandmother Angela and Aunt Kat  were the three girls that made the trip with their mother.  My Grandmother told me about the trip no details though as she too was very young probably 4 or 5.  My sister has been looking into Ellis Island records but nothing concrete yet.  Again it's the common name that is an issue but we'll get working on it.  Her name is Arleen and her e-mail is crafty107@aol.com. Any info we have is Carrick on Suir, County Waterford.  So you are probably right on that they were from the south side.  There was a cousin Kathleen (from Ireland) that wrote when Uncle Edward(Ted) Rocheford had been to visit them when they he was in the service.
