#Virginia, Deaths and Burials Index
We are still looking for documentation of the lineage of Andrew and
Mary and could certainly use some help here. It seems is this
first land records that Andrew may be a son of Noah and Sarah
Bishop. The land seems to have been bought from Levi Bishop by
Noah and then deed to Andrew about the time of his marriage to
Mary. Andrew and Mary may have been cousins since they have the
same last name in the marriage records of Smyth Co., Virginia.
One of the mysteries that we have is why in the marriage record for
Elmiera and James Doyle is it stated that the father is
"unknown." It is conceivable, no pun intended, that Mary Bishop
was pregnant by someone else and that Andrew Love stepped in "to do the
right thing." Either way we believe the woman that married Andrew in
1833 is the correct person. We still don't know who her
father may have been. We believe that Andrew's father was Noah
Bishop. In any case we have found no other Bishop families
in Smyth County that are not related to the same ancestors.
Mary Ann Bishop(24) is a name in John Bishop's family in 1860 but she's
too young to be the mother of Caroline who is already age 27.
Caroline needs to fit into a different family but I think they are all
related. John and Andrew are probably brothers.
Caroline's age fits well into the Andrew Bishop family but it would be
nice to have some real proof.
Below are a number of Bishop families that have an E. Bishop
female born about 1833 listed in the 1850 census of Virginia.
There is
only one Caroline Bishop in the 1850 census but she is in the eastern
part of the state. Her mother has to be a Mary as a
mother. I'm
looking at Mary E. as a daughter as a possible alternative or
additional name to Elimira. It may be a long shot to include our
Elmira in the family of Andrew and Mary but the dates could work if the
birthdates of Levi were a little loose. It is
also possible that
she may have been an orphaned child of one of the other many Bishop
families but if she is not listed where is she hiding? Caroline and
Elmira are not typical names in the Bishop families, in fact there is
only one in the Bishops of Smyth and Washington counties but she
doesn't seem to be a widow of a Bishop by the age of 16. So is
her
name an adopted name? The only known Caroline Bishop is born in South
Carolina. This eliminates her from contention since Elmira is born
inVirginia in every census.

wife Sarah conveyed to Levi Bishop
for $180 ... deeds granting Levi's former
land to Andrew Bishop of Smyth

"In the 1860 Smyth County census, Andrew
Bishop is 48-year old Farmer. Real estate value is
$5000 and personal estate $2000. His wife, Mary, is 44 years old and
caring for five children still at home. [Bishop p43]
