James Doyle is said to have worked on the construction of a railroad from Norfork,Virginia to Bristol, Tennessee shortly after his arrival. Since the railroad ended in Bristol this is where they made their home. The railroad didn't get to Chilhowie, Virginia until 1853 which does not necessarily prove the story.

1860- Smyth County, VA US Census has James Doyle listed

1870 - He is found working as a gardener for the wealthy Preston family. He could have worked for the estate in Virginia or Tennessee since the border is right here.

1880 - James Doyle is still living in Marion Township, Smyth County, Virginia. He seems to be living next door to a niece or his daughter with two children and his son James with a wife and daughter.

1900 - James Doyle Jr. is still living in Marion County, Seven Mile Ford, Enum. Dist. 79, sheet 7. p. 21
He is widowed but caring for several children. He remarries shortly after this to a Mollie, who shows up in 1910 with four more children of their own.

1910- US Census,Seven Mile Ford, Smyth County, Virginia. Enum. Dist 92, Sheet 7 There seems to be several things wrong with this census especially concerning the last three entries.  See the 1920 cenus for these last children.

James J. Doyle fam about 1900
According to the ages of the individuals we believe this to be James Jackson Doyle and Mollie
with sons James and Floyd and elder daughter Margaret and perhaps Bessie about 1904. With the high infant mortality
the other two children in the 1900 census probably died by the time of the photo.

On this same estate working as a carpenter is William Nicols Grubb. A. C. Beatie, the mayor of Chilhowie, VA visited James Doyle and looked at the bible record in 1942. This document was needed to provide a birth certificate for Henry Cochran Grubb at age 53 "to qualify for a new defence job." It is a hand written note about 8.5 x 5.5" apparently completely by A. C. Beatie.

1917 - June 5 - Two of the sons of James Jackson sign up for the draft.  We also get a correction here of the birthdates that seemed to have been guessed at on the 1900 census.

James Beverly Doyle   is age 29, born Feb 16, 1887.  natural born in 7 Mile Ford, VA. he is a brakeman NAWRy Co. Roanoke VA.
sister (unnamed) is next of kin. He's Single, Caucasian , medium height, stout build, blue eyes, black hair. signing up in Roanoke VA.

John Lofton Doyle is age 24, , born Dec 3, 1892, natural born in Seven Mile Ford, VA, works as helper in Wagon Factory. Look & Lincoln. Marion VA. married , caucasian.  He is tall and slender, blue eyes and black hair.  signing up in Smyth VA.

1920 - US Census, Marion Dist., Smyth Co., VA.  enum. dist. 111, sheet 1b. The birth place of the Mother of all these children is apparently wrong since Mollie was supposed to be his wife for ten years in the 1910 census and she was born in North Carolina.  This should be for James Jackson rather that James L. his son.
