I know virtually nothing about this family and are still in the process of verifying the information. We have various spellings of this family including Hammonds, Hammon, Hammons, Hamon, Hamond.  We have no proof that Margaret is a member of this family.  We have only included her with a possible position in this family.  Our belief that she may be a member of this family is circumstantial based on the other Hammonds/Hammons that do come from this family living in Lincoln Co., KY by 1791 until 1821.

1782, Sep  27- John HAMMONDS married Polly DENNEY. William HOLBROOK, Bondsman. G. Wheatley, Witness. Bond No. 000165504. Record No. 01106, Transcript of Wilkes Marriage Bonds. (Compiled by LDS.)

1786,  Ju1 27, it is ordered John HAMMONDS be exempted from a Poll Tax for 1785.

The 1787 Tax List for Wilkes County, NC, shows John HAMON in Captain S. JOHNSON's District with 150 Acres and 2 Polls. (From New River Notes.)

1796, Feb 6 John HAMMONDS and his wife, Polly (or Mary) DENNEY, applied for dismissal from the South Fork of Roaring River Baptist Church located near Wilksboro, Wilkes County, NC. However, she died, leaving him with several children, before they were able to leave the area.

Marriages in Lincoln Co., Ky. - By the age of children in the census of 1810 we believe that some of these marriages were probably to some of John's children. We have no records that as yet identify positively our particular John's wife.

1800, June 29 - John's name is in Lincoln County, KY, Deed Records showing that he bought ninety-five acres on Logan's Creek from Lewis POTTER.

                        [Deeds of Lincoln Co., Kentucky]

1808 - 4 Jun 1808, John HAMMONDS served on a Jury in the case of "Surry", a Negro Man Slave charged with having committed murder. [Lincoln County, KY, Records, Vol. III, page 443.]

1810- John Hammond and a possible brother or son is here in Lincoln Co., Kentucky. There are obviously a number of children in the family that haven't been accounted for. We believe there were at least twelve possible children. We think that the Henry and Abram that show in the 1830 census are probably John's children.
             Hammond, John             1 2 1 1 1 - 2 1 3 1 1 - 0 0  [US Census, Lincoln Co., KY]
             Hammond, George         2 0 0 1 0 - 0 0 1 0 0 - 0 0  [US Census, Lincoln Co., KY]

1820- The marriage license for Jonathan Stugess and Peggy Hammond seems to give the name of the parents in our reading as John Hammond and Jonathan Sturgess. Even though it looks plausable we concerned because we haven't seen reinforcing documents that puts a John Hammond of the right age in this area's census. We do find a Thomas Hammons here.

1820 - Thomas Hammon is in Lincoln Co., KY, we don't know if this is a relative or not. [US Census, Lincoln Co., KY]

1830 US Census, Lincoln Co, KY, p. 351
On the same page we find several associated families living next door to one another. Our main relative is Margaret Sturges, who is head of household with her several children. 1male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 3 females between 5-10, 1 female 40-50
We assume that there is a set of twin girls possible between 5-10. She seems to be living next door to her probable brother, Henry Hammond, and James Henry, the probable father to John S. Henry who marries Martha Sturgess, daughter of Margaret.

1850 - US Census, Lincoln Co. Ky, p. 293
Here we see Stugis and a Hammon family living in proximity. We believe these people to be related but we have no firm proof at this time. If they are related it would seem that Sarah Hammon below would probably be the wife of "Peggy's" brother, who apparently is dead by this census. This is sheer conjecture and everything on this page is unproved. We hope that someone out there has the facts on this family.
