The Clyde family
probably originated in the Scotland. The vale of Clyde and the
river
Clyde form a region of Scotland that was probably the home of
the
family. Since I have little information on the ancestors this
is a
projection without fact. Since all census records for W.W.
Clyde say
that he is born in New York by 1808 we must assume that his
family were
earlier settlers to the New York region. Very few
records give a
middle name but the one land record of 1841 indicates it may
be
Wallace. Although there is no known connection to the
Wallace
family the name is connected to a Scottish hero who died in
1305.
William Wallace was a military commander of Scottish folklore
portrayed
by Mel Gibson in Braveheart. Although the movie may be
a more
dramatic version than his early real life, he was consider at
outlaw to
King Edward I of England and eventually tried and convicted,
stripped
naked, dragged by horse through the London streets, hanged,
casterated,
eviscerated, quartered, and beheaded. [wikipedia.com]
Although the father of W. W. Clyde is unknown at this time, any one of the following could be the father. Matthew Clyde, son of Colonel Samuel Clyde, had a son William who could be the right age in Ostego, New York. There are only five Clyde families listed in New York in the 1810 census and all have children of the correct age to be William Clyde. Three (G. Clyde, J. Clyde, and M. Clyde)live in Otsego, NY., one (James Clyde)in New York City, one (William Clyde) in Clinton, NY. I'm hopeful that someone can identify these families and lead me to the proper ancestor at least by deduction.
1808 - born NY
I'm unsure about whether this person is a relative but in the
War of
1812, a W.W. Clyde served in Edward Cary's N.Y. Militia. The
date
of1815, July 3 is given in the military records, I assumed
this date
was the marriage date but now believe to be the birth date of
Katherine. This W. W. Clyde marries a Katherine Tibbets in
Schuyler NY.
They had both lived in Jefferson City PA and Catturagus City,
NY.
Pension # SC-2188 [Index to pension Files, War of 1812, Vol I
A-F, Nat.
Hist. Pub. Co, Wynesboro Ten, 1989], The date doesn't
apply to my
W. W. Clyde. My relative is only four years old at the War
of 1812, it
is possible for this to be W. W. Clyde senior but if this is
the
marriage date it could not be the mother of my relative
since he should
have been born in 1808. If it is the application date it is
still
possible for this to be the correct family.
1810- Census records are inconclusive since he could be part of several families listed. There are only five Clyde families listed in New York in the 1810 census and all have children of the correct age to be William Clyde. Three (G. Clyde, J. Clyde, and M. Clyde)live in Otsego, NY., (page 125) one (James Clyde)in New York City(page 220), one (William Clyde) in Clinton Co., Chazy, NY.(page 25) Information on these families you can find on my chart of the Clydes of New York and New Hampshire. I believe there is a connection but have not been able to establish proof. I'm hoping that someone knows more about these families.
1820 - 1830 W. W.
Clyde is in NY? Perhaps.
- The years between W. W. Clyde's birth and his move to
Alabama is a
complete mystery. I believe he may have enlisted in the Army
and been
involved in the Indian Wars somehow. After the pacification of
the
Indians, I propose, he stayed in the region to marry Teressa
Clark. W. W. Clyde may have traveled to
this area of Alabama for the land made available by the
removal of the
Choctaw and the Creek after the election of Andrew Jackson in
1829 and
the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
1836, Oct. 27- William W. Clyde marries Teressa C. Clark in Tuscaloosa, Alabama [Early Alabama Marriages, Family Adventures, P. O. Box 290354, San Antonio, TX 78280-1754]
Of the three Clark
families in Alabama in 1840, I believe her father was Abner
Clark of
South Carolina who probably brought his family here in the
1830's.
Abner Sr. seems to have died by the 1840 census but his wife
is still
living and is 70 - 80 years old living with Abner Clark
30-40yrs, the
probable older brother to Teressa. The other possibility may
be Samuel
Clark 40 to 50 years, who only has a 20 to 30 year old wife at
home.
1840- - W. W. Clyde
is
in Leake Co., Miss. He has two girls under 5 years, a wife of
30-40
years, and no slaves, although they are all involved in
Agriculture.

1845- I do not know
if
this is the same Clyde as mine but he is in approximately the
same area
and at the same time. A William Wallace Clyde files
for a land
claim on land that had been previously part of the Chickasaw
Indian
territory until 1832. Leake County (along with about 15
others) were
cut from the Choctaw Session lands which were purchased for
$3,000,000
dollars. The Chickasaw natives were resettled in Oklahoma on
purchased
Choctaw reservation land and did travel on the "trail of
tears" where
500 died from dysentery and small pox. W. W. Clyde's
land is in
the "North West quarter of Section Ten, in Township Twenty
two, of
Range Ten, East, in the District Lands subject to sale at
Pontotoc,
Mississippi, containing one hundred and sixty acres and twenty
four
hundredths of an acre. " It was assigned to Alexander
Kirkpatrick as
filing for the W. W. Clyde. I have no other information on the
relationship of Kirkpatrick to Clyde. His family doesn't seem
to stay
in one place long and moves to Louisiana by 1850. [certificate

Robert B. Clyde enlisted in the 3rd Infantry Regiment of
Arkansas on 9
Apr 1865 as a "musician". [American Civil War Soldiers.
Robert seems to be very late in joining if this date is the
first
date. Researchers have said that he actually joined in 1861
which would
mean that he was probably with this particular Regiment
which had been
at Gettysburg in Longstreet's Corp and fought at
Chickamauga,
1863. Robert was probably at High Bridge and Farmville
in
1865; the regiment was also in the retreat with Lee,
and
surrendered at Appomattox. [Confederate Military

drunk.
In July "Willie" Hollaway and his mother show up on the census but under "Rozen Hollaway" in Portland, Ark. as "32f keeping house, with $2000 real estate and $1200 value of personal estate." This record is very messed up. with the birth dates of the children consistently wrong by one person. William should only be 10, Imogene's sister, Elly Clyde(17 Louisiana) is here. She is to marry Jesse Stanford on Oct 30, of this year. Imogene's mother may also be here, but the unnamed mother should be 56 as the last person on the list, although born in S. C. Willie's other two brothers, John and Albert, and one sister, Alice, are also here. [Ark 1870, Ashley 198 Portland]
