Gunhild is named "kinswoman of King Cnut" in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.  She was expelled from England in 1045 and lived in Bruges before going to Denmark.  [Foundation for Medieval Genealogy - Denmark]

1030 - Haakon is only about 33 years old.  He was probably sailing with his crew through the strait off Orkney Islands when his boat was caught in one of the very violet waves.  This strait of Pentland Firth is know for its 11 mph tidal changes that create great challenges for present day mariners.  The Orkney Islands, according to present, DNA studies confirm the settlement as having Viking roots whose Norse name is Orkneyjar.

The settlement on Orkney had been before 955 when Gunhild returned there with some of her sons. [Foundation ... Norway]
