*Foundation
for Medieval Genalogy.
The family developed is based on the the genealogy of the Roskilde Cathedral, Roskilde, Denmark. This cathedral is one of the oldest in Denmark and is the burial place of the largest number of king, queens and other nobility in all of Europe including Harold Bluetooth, one of the greatest kings of Denmark.
According to Saxo Grammaticus, King Erik was "unusually
tall…matched by corresponding strength" but "only the
power of lust and the rage of intemperance marred this
brilliance of body and mind"
[Foundation... Denmark Kings]
These families have
records and the family crests are found in the Roskilde
Cathedral web site and go back to about 1100.
1102 -Erik had announced in Viborg that he was going on a
pilgrimage to the Holy Land. With a large contingency he and
his wife Bodil travel through Russian to Constantinople. On
the way he stayed with the emperor (could be the emperor of the
Holy Roman Empire). He became ill but decided to continue by
ship to Cyprus where he died. Bodil continued on to
Jerusalem where she died and is buried at the foot of Mount of
Olives in the Valley of Josaphat. [wikipedia.org]
According to the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy,
he took the Pilgrimage as penance for having killed four men in
battle. Interestingly, it seem his sons didn't seem to have
any guilt at all and proceeded to steal and pillage the country
along with attacks on one another.
Harald had six illegitimate children by unknown
mistresses. Apparently Harald was regent while his father
had gone on his pilgrimage in 1102/03. During this time
Harald decided to pillage and steal out of the fort at Roskilde.
One of the persons whose property he took was from his half bother
Erik II and tried to deny him his position. This made many
enemies until finally his half-brother, Erik II, had Harald and
his sons brought to justice and had them all murdered.
