Benjamin was probably born at the original home site of Caleb Kirkland near Bridge Creek of the South Edisto River in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He also marries Winnefred Armstrong in Edgefield County by Frank Walker, Minister of the Gospel. All this comes from the Bounty Land Warrants.

There were five Benjamin Kirklands listed in the 1840 Henry Co., Alabama census. This proved confusing to researchers.

1815- Benjamin Kirkland served in the War of 1812. His Bounty Land records report that he served from 4 February 1815- 18 March 1815. He was a private in Captain W. Wall's Company of the South Carolina Militia. [Peacock 178]

Benjamin eventually holds a commission in the Alabama Militia as Captain of the 25th (Henry County) Regiment on 12 September 1823. On January 1, 1835 he attains the rank of Lt. Colonel while in Abbeville, Alabama. He becomes known locally as "Colonel Benjamin Kirkland".

1842, Feb 9 - Benjamin and Winnefred Kirkland sell their Lot 13 in Abbeville, which fronted on Kirkland Street. The buyer was Robert Kennedy for $50.00. [Henry Co. Deed Book C, pages 189-190]

1851 - Benjamin Kirkland receives a Bounty Land grant.

1854 , March 24 - Benjamin and Winnifred sell Lot 28 which ia bounded on Washington and Williams Streets, Henry Co., AL.

November 23, - Benjamin dies in Henry County, Alabama.

1860 - Ruth is listed in the household of her son, James Madison Kirkland in Dale Co., AL. Also here is Matilda (13) and Zacheriah (9) both children of Zachariah, (Ruth's son).

William S. Kirkland is listed in Walton Co., FL. He is in the household of James J. Kirkland(36) and Sarah Kirkland (35). Researcher still do not know the identity of this couple.

1861- 1864 During the Civil War several of William S. sons serve in the Confederate Army.
1862, 25 September and 12 March - Winnefred Kirkland filed for benefits as the next of kin to a Confederate solder who died in the line of service. She claimed to be the next of kin to Martin V. Kirkland. Martin V. was 21 years old in 1860. He served in Company B, 6yh Alabama Infantry Regiment.
