The records for the Kirklands of this era are very confusing due to the naming of the children similarly. This is laid out as clearly as can be illustrated by Wilma Kirkland in the following excerpt :

1753 - John and Snoten (Snowden) Kirkland are listed in the poll of Samuel Henderson's District in Granville Co., North Carolina. [KSBR v. 1, p. 28]

4 May 1752 - Council Journal Vol. 20 ( part1) pp. 210-211, 4 Feb 1752-17 Jul 1752

He has a wife, three children, one white servant and five Negroes. His petition granted 5 May 1752.[So. Caro. Archives, misc. rec., KSBR v.1 p71]

4 Jun 1753 - Council Journal Vol. 21 (pt. 2) pp. 467-468, 13 Apr 1753- 14 Dec 1753
Petition of KIRKLAND states he obtained a warrant for 350 A of land 5 May 1752 which is not executed, he not having found a proper place for settlement which he has now done and hath settled himself thereon and maede improvements being on the Wateree. He wants his warrant lengthened 6 mo. from this date and that same may be surveyed on the foot of Wateree Ck. Petition was signed by MOSES KIRKLAND & was granted. (Note -- see 1st entry under COLONIAL PLATS, GRANTS & MEMORIALS, SCA. This petition was for Richard Kirkland, even tho' MOSES signed it.)[So. Caro. Archives, misc. rec., KSBR v.1 p71]

4 Jun 1753 - Council Journal Vol. 21 (pt. 2) pp. 456, 13 Apr 1753- 13 Dec 1753
Read the petition of MOSES KIRKLAND humbly setting forth that he wishes to settle on the Santee. He has 1 Negro for whom nor for himself no land has been assigned ... prays for an order of 100A on Santee to be run out & a grant for the same... Petition was considered & petitioner swore to the truth of his said family right & Deputy Sec. ordered to prepare warrant & the Surveyor General to lay out 1000 A so the grant may be prepared. [So. Caro. Archives, misc. rec., KSBR v.1 p71]

1752 - 1754- The first mention of Richard Kirkland in South Carolina is when 350 acres are laid out for him "at foot of Wateree Ck., bds. N by Wateree R.," by George Hunter, His majesty's surveyor,' under a precept dated May 5, 1752, but the survey was not made until July 27, 1753, nearly a year after the order had been issued and there seem to have been earlier settlers for his lands laid out to Richard Greggrie (Gregory) and Joseph Cates & NW vacant. JOHN HAMILTON, DS. Path from the Congarees to Catawba nation runs thru property.

Richard and Joseph Kirkland had come to Camden about 1752 with a group of Quakers, "companion settlers, though not members of the sect." [McMaster, Fritz H., History of Fairfield County, S. C. 1946, The State Commercial Printing Co., Columbia S. C.] These brothers were sons of William (probable son of old Richard that died in Fairfax Co., VA 1742-43

May 1754 - Richard, the father of Moses Kirkland, makes a memorial for 567 acres in Craven Co., S. C.

7 May 1762 - Richard Kirkland files for land in Craven Co., SC

1772, March 28 - Quit Rents 1767-1774, pp. 380-181- SC Archives

Moses Kirkland was the most notorious of the brothers. Moses was "naturally acquisitive and hardriving, Kirkland was not above selling rum to the Indians and dealing in fraudulent land warrants, he soon accumulated numerous tracts of land in the interior, built a sawmill, ran a ferry on the lower Saluda until he had accumulated the labor of enough slaves to develop a large tract on the tributary of Stevens Creek, a branch of the Savannah." He eventually becomes a Colonel in the Loyalist Army. [Lambert p.4]

Moses Kirkland was eventually taken prisoner along with his son and self exiled to the island of Jamaica after the Revolution. He dies in a ship wreck on the voyage to England. See his page for more on this story.
