*records according to Dr. J. R. Peacock.

Alcey Kirkland was the daughter of Caleb Kirkland who immigrated with at least two of this brothers and their families to Henry Co., Alabama from Edgefield Co., South Carolina about 1817. Researchers have long tried to figure out the relationship of Alcy to the rest of the Kirkland records.

1830- Census records in Henry Co., AL missed the John Scott family.

1840- William R. Kelley family shows in Henry Co., AL

1850, Feb. 20 - Ruth and William Kirkland are divorced in Henry County, AL.
The record book is badly damaged and many pages are fused together so that they can't be read. The records that can be read state plainly that she had received property from the estate of her father, Moses Kirkland, and that her husband had "wasted and squandered" at least some of the inheritance. Apparently Moses Kirkland had known of his character before he died and tried place the inheritance only in her hands. She asked for the remaining property be placed in a trusteeship of her son-in-law, Moses Brackin. She indicated that the divorce was because of cruelty and alcohol abuse by her husband.

Moses denied the charges and her counter-sued her for abandonment as of 12 July 1849. Depositions from John and Sarah Holland, Benjamin H. Kirkland (her brother), Elizabeth Kirkland (wife of Caleb, her uncle) seemed to support Ruth's position.

1859- Zacheriah Kirkland moved to Shelby Co., Texas.

1860 - Ruth is listed in the household of her son, James Madison Kirkland in Dale Co., AL. Also here is Matilda (13) and Zacheriah (9) both children of Zachariah, (Ruth's son).

William S. Kirkland is listed in Walton Co., FL. He is in the household of James J. Kirkland(36) and Sarah Kirkland (35). Researcher still do not know the identity of this couple.

1861- 1864 During the Civil War several of William S. sons serve in the Confederate Army.
William Jasper Kirkland (son of Willis and Delaney) enlisted in Company E, 60th Alabama Infantry Regiment 10 Mar 1862
Elzy Kirkland served in Hood's Texas Brigade, 5th Texas Infantry Regiment, Co. K
James Madison is in the 3rd Battalion of the Hilliards' Legion.
1881, March 11 - William S. Kirkland dies in Tyler County, Texas. He is buried at Bethany Cemetery.
