Nancy Kirkland was the daughter of Caleb Kirkland who immigrated with at least two of this brothers and their families to Henry Co., Alabama from Edgefield Co., South Carolina about 1817. Researchers have long tried to figure out the relationship of Nancy to the rest of the Kirkland records. Discovery of the Bible record of Caleb Kirkland finally resolved the problem. Additionally the Scott bible firmly establishes the births of Nancy and John's children.

1830- Census records in Henry Co., AL missed the John Scott family.

1840- John Scott family shows in Henry Co., AL

1844- March 5 - William Scott marries Nancy Kirkland in Henry Co., AL.

1850 - Census shows a Nancy Scott, a widow, with a four year old son, William Scott in Henry Co., AL. It is assumed that William Sr. died shortly after his marriage and that this is his widow and young son.

The Scott Bible shown here appears to have the same border of the bible that was given to Elijah Kirkland about the same time.   This seems to confirm my belief that the Kirkland bible was created before the Civil War.  The bible was actually published in Cooperstown, N. Y in 1840.

1859, Aug 30 - John Scott dies
1859, Dec 10 - Nancy Scott dies ---   There were several more deaths of other family members in the summer of 1859 due to an unidentified illness.  All are buried in the Sholar Cemetery, Shelby County, Texas.   The 111 acre cemetery was founded on land previously owned by William Scott, son of John and Nancy(Kirkland) Scott, who sold it to William Scholar, his brother-in-law.
