In Testimony Whereof, I James Buchanan President of the
Unities STATES OF AMERICA, have caused these Letters to made
PATENT, and the SEAL of the GENERAL LAND OFFICE to be hereunto
affixed.

1891 - Raiford M. Spann files for 39+ acres
of land at the Montgomery, Alabama land office. The land is
listed as North West Quarter of the North East quarter of
Section eighteen in Township five North of Range twenty nine
East of the St Stephens Merdian in Alabama. [BLM land records. ,
homestead certificate no. 7626]
about 1996 - Monument stone at
the Spann Roney Cemetery give the dates listed above as well as
this history of the family.
"Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations."
"This cemetery and the adjoining lands are the site of the John Edward Spann, Sr. Homestead. He came to Henry County with his wife and children from Ridge Springs, S. C. in the winter of 1832-33. We believe this ground was first set aside for use as a family cemetery in 1852. At the close of the Civil War other local families began using the cemetery as a community graveyard. The cemetery was maintained by the Spann family for many years afterwards. The original gravestones and other markers were destroyed in the early 1980's and the cemetery placed in pine tree cultivation. It was restored in 1996 through the efforts of Spann and Roney family members and concerned residents with the cooperation of the Georgia Pacific Corporation. The Old Spann one and a half story log home sat just west of here near the Abbeville-Columbia Road. It was also destroyed at the same time as the cemetery. Morris and Hugh Roney came to Henry County in 1825 and 1837 from Barnwell, S. C. The Roney lands were just south of here. It is believed that a few Indians are buried here. Everyone buried here may never be known. "
"May all these souls rest with God."
