1775-76 - William Townes is listed as a 2nd Leut. of the Virginia Revolutionary Army by the DAR. Wife is listed as Obediance Allen. [DAR Index. p. 2962]
William Townes served in the Virginia Militia seeing service in Virginia and South Carolina.
2nd Lieut. Cumberland County, Virginia Militia.
William Townes after close of Revolutionary War removed to South Carolina settling in Greenville County - listed as head of family in Greenville District of S. C. in the census of 1790.
Later he returned to Virginia making his home in Cumberland County, where died in may 1825.

There is, in my opinion, a misreading of the hand written record for "Mary m. Berry Jones" when it should be written "Mary m. Benj Jones".

1805- A survey for Samuel Townes in Greenville
Co., SC for thirty-six acres.
Note that Samuel Townes land is neighboring Wm.
Townes land. Apparently this survey was for the adoption
of the surveyed piece of property rather than a sale, according
to Jacob Forister.

recorded the Bible pages for the Townes family. These were listed
on the Genforum web pages by Elizabeth Blount from a typed copy
made about 1950.

I Rachel Towns being of a sound mind and disposin of my death. I will and divise to him the following property as sufficiaent for the purpose viz. I divise to my said sone John A.Townes the Johnson tract of land continuing One hundred and fifty acres of land more or less, and one half of the Paris tract of land also the following negroes Rubin a negro and a negro woman Hannah and her two youngest children Sarah Ann Sampson and Mary, but if he shall be unwilling to accept the same my will is that all said property land and negroes be sold and the procedes applied to the paying of any just claims he may be able to establish, and the surplus equally divided among my children --- Item 2nd I will and devise to my son John A Townes all my interest in the Colcock tract of land and also my interest in one third of the Vance tract of land the latter to him during his life and after his death to William Augustus Townes and should the latter die without leaving male heir alive at his death then said home tract of land to go the youngest son of G. T Townes and it is my wish to John A Townes shall have the privilege of residing on the home place as he may live. I also will and devise to the said John A Townes a tract of land known as the Tyson Watson tract to him and his heirs forever Twt as a condition of my son John A Townes receiving and enjoying the land herein divised to him, he is required to release to W. August Townes all his interest or claim in the other two thirds of the home tract, and to G. T Townes all his interest and claims in the Brushy Creek tract also absolutely and forever. Item 3 -- I further will and bequeath to my son John A. Townes a negro named Jim and it is my will that my negro man Bratohen shall belong to and be taken care of by John A. Townes and W.Townes --- Item 4th I will and devise to my son W. Augustus Townes the River tract of land containing five hundred acres more or less to him and his heirs forever. I also will and divise to W Augustus Townes all my interest in the other two tracts of the home tract of land, but he is to receive and enjoy these diverse of land on conditions the he shall release to John A Townes all his interest in the Colcock tract of land, and to G. T. townes all his interest in the Brushy creek tract of land ---- Item 5th I will and bequeath to son W Augustus Townes two negros named Ben and Manuel and a negro child Bill son of Hannah, also Rose and her child and future increase to him and his heirs forever --- Item 6th I will and devise to my son G. T Townes all my interest in the Brushy creek tract of land also I will and bequeath to G T Townes a negro boy Rial son of Annis . But as a condition of receiving and enjoying the said devise he is required to release to John A Townes and W. A. Townes respectively his interest in the Colcock tract of land and home tract of land according to the provisions of this will to each of them. interest in the the Colcock land to J. A Townes & the home tract to tract of J. A Townes one third, and to W. A Townes two thirds -- Item 8 I will to my executors a negro woman Annis in trust for my daughter E. P. Blasingame with power on them to sell or exchange here for other property within like trust to the legal title to remain in the hand of my executors and the procedes of the heirs for interest of said property to be paid to my said daughter annually during her life, and after her death to the children of my son Samuel A Townes. --- Item 9th I will to my executors a negro Sylva and her children, and future increase also a negro man Stepheny increase for the seperate use and benefit of the family of my son Samuel A. Townes, his wife and chldren, and my executors are to have the power to sell or exchange said property and make other investments of said trust property but it is my desire that the negro man Stefeny shall never be carried out of this district. --- Item 10th my executors are directed to said a good horse and mare from among my stock of horses and five the same to my grand son Samuel Townes. All the said of my stock of cattle and horses and hoges, the growing crop I will and devise to my sons John A Townes and W Augustus Townes but out of this they are required to pay all lawful debts i may be owning at my death I also will and devise to them on the same terms and conditions my wagon and farming tools and the set of Blacksmith tools------ Item 11th All my household furniture I devise to be divided equally amongest all my children as they may see fit or as any two disinterested persons chosen by my executors may determine But the household furniture and other items in possession of my son S. A. Townes, I leave to my executors in trust for the separate use of his family ----- Item 12th All debts or demands which I may have or hold against any of my children, i will to be cancelled and released by my executors at my death. no aurguements being required ---- Lastly I do hereby revoke and annual all former wills made by me and do declare this to be my last will and testament and I do hereby appoint my sones G. T. Townes , John A Townes and W.(? Olequesly) Townes Executors of this my last will and testament, my executors are disected to raise out of the crop which may be left at my death the sum of Thirty five dollars to be applied to aid in building Salem Meeting House ---- and I further request and require my sons John A Townes and W. A. Townes to lay the sum of thirty five dollars annually for the support of my Brother Jonathan and his wife according to the terms of a writing drawn up by L. T. Townes and which I have ..... voluntarily complied with though I have not signed the same. writin by my hand and seal 13th July 1850
