1847 - Elijah is born in Henry Co., Alabama as the third surviving child of his parents, Zacheriah Kirkland and Mary Cole.
1850 - Elijah is three years old living with his father and
mother
in Henry Co, Alabama. He is identified as a female on the census
probably due to the abbreviation of the census taker writing it
like
the shortened version of Elizabeth.
[US Census M432-6, Alabama, Henry Co, p430]
1860- Elijah is thirteen years old and still living with his
parents
in Henry Co. Alabama.
[US Census M653-11 Alabama, Henry Co, p430]
1864-65 - He joins the Confederate States Army at the age of 17
or
18. Co. E, 63rd Reg.AL-C(calvary), from July 1864 to surrender in
1865.
(Arkansas Conf. Veterans and Widows Pensions Application, 1985)
As he goes off to war I believe someone in the family, perhaps
his father or mother, copied the family lineage into a bible that
he held onto until his death. This bible page is the key to
about 200 families in Henry Co., Alabama.
1866, 26 August - Elijah A. Kirkland marries Nancy Jane Roney, at the house of Hugh Roney in the county of Henry and state of Alabama. by Thomas Brown J. P. [Marriages 1822-1868, p. 546 ] The house of Hugh Roney is her grandfather since her father James Roney, had died five years earlier in the war.
There are some interesting discrepancies in her age, she is definitely at least 3 years older than Elijah by 1870 census (below) , but by 1860, a Nancy J. Roney is already 19 is living with her mother Nancy(53) and several brothers, including Hugh(14) while her apparent father, Hugh(69), lives next door. (US Census 1860, M653-11, p197)
This should make her 29 years by 1870 instead of 25 but she is
out
of descending order on the census and could be miss-written for 14
or
13 by census taker. However, the 1850 puts her in the family of
Hugh(59)NC and Nancy(47)SC as age 9. [1850 US census, Henry Co.
423
So.]
All of the data supports the fact that there were two Nancy
Roney's,
the daughter, Nancy, of Hugh Roney who marries John Elbert Elliot.
Whereas, James' daughter Nancy only five years younger, marries
Elijah
Kirkland. James died in the Civil War of some contracted
disease
only one year into the war. Nancy is raised by her grand
parents.
1867- William Warren is born in Alabama.
1870- Elijah(23) and Nancy(25) have a two year old son, William
Warren, and Caleb R. Kirkland (15)(Elijah's youngest brother) is
living
with them in Alabama.
Zachariah, Elijah's father, is not in the 1870 census and had died
3
June 1865.
[US Census M593-19, Alabama, Henry Co. p334]
1871- Alice L. is born in Alabama.
1873- Lee Roy is born in Alabama.
1873-76 the family moves to Mississippi where Mary E. is born about 1876.
1876-80 the family moves to Lincoln Co., Well's Bayou Twp.,
Arkansas
[US Census, 1880 Ark. T593-19 Lincoln Co 89,
1880- US Census, 1880 Ark. T593-19 Wells Bayou Twp., Lincoln Co
89,
Vol 8, ed. 180, #27, 39 - notice that his last name is
listed as
Kirklan not Kirkland.
1892, Jan 3 - E. P. (Elijah Peyton) Roney(31) marries
Livvie George(25) in Ashley Co., AR. marriage license dated 1 Jan
1892
Ashley Co., AR. [Arkansas, County Marriage Index, 1837-1957]
We actually don't know how this couple is related to the Kirkland
family. I believe Elijah is a nephew of Nancy Roney but I
haven't
been able to make the connection.
1897-Jan 19 - Elijah dies on Pine Prairie, Ashley, Ark. after several weeks of illness.
"Bro. Mitchel, his pastor, in the funeral service said 'he was
above the average in his goodness,' which statement is evidently
true.
Dry as it was last year his farm made corn enough to do the
place. He
was one of the few who freely gave all he was able to the cause
of
Christ. Many parents desert their children when they marry, not
so with
this brother; his tender love, good advice and financial help
ever
followed them. He had two orphan children in his home and
treated them
as his own. He was a strong supporter of churches, schools and
every
good enterprise. If all church members would work as he did,
every
church would have its own pastor, who would be free from debt
and would
have both hands on the Bible. then the pulpit would be what God
intended to be, a power irresistible for doing good. A Friend"
