The farm names in this list are linked to family history pages.  On some occasions the farm names have been used as family names but this is not typical.  The naming pattern in Scandinavia is usually based on the father's first name becoming the last name of the next generation.  For instance Knud Olsen's children would be named perhaps Johan Knudsen or Knud's son.  His daughters would be Knudsdatter or Knud's daughter. Some researchers have used the farm names, as some church records also did, to differentiate one Ole Olsen from the other with a reference to the farm on which they were living at the time of the event.  Some Norwegian immigrants took the farm name as their last name when coming to the United States such as my Rohne family, on the maps it is spelled Ronne. The spelling of some of the farms change over time and usage. Land records weren't consistent until after 1773. Oluf Rygh's Norwegian farm names was commissioned to sort out the changes in the names and make sense of the records for governmental and legal issues.  It's nineteen volumes research back through Medieval texts to modern texts. The bygdebok's were another government sponsored research and are invaluable to researchers.  They were divided among various local parish and vary in what kinds of information they contain.  The most important for my families have been the Stangeboka and the Romedalboka which are neighboring regions in Hedmark state. Historically Oppland had been a part of Hedmark. Through political intrigue and governmental necessity Hedmark was divided.  Hedmark still remains one of the largest states in Norway.

Some of the farms have stand alone pages and others are included in the family page research.  As with all of my research I'm not just interested in a lists of surnames names.  I want to know something about how they lived and what was going on at the time they were raising their families.  Since the records here stretch so far back in time we find great changes that occurred.  Many of the families were very successful even though the land was controlled by a feudal lord, king or local parish church.  There are in the records also a few bankruptcies and people having their land confiscated and auctioned off.  Some families survived to farm the same land for over two hundred years through multiple generations.  Many of the families had married into other farms and you will find links to other farms included.  I don't have the time to track every individuals families so most of the records deal with straight line ancestors as far back as I have been able to find verifiable records.  I've tried to identify the document that leads me to believe in the connection.  I'm open to other researchers verification or inclusion.  This work is on-going and tedious.  The Stangeboka is an on-line series of documents in Norwegian.  It has proved most useful and I wish that more similar sources were available.  They have here laid out the family genealogy for each of the farms.  I have found there are gaps in the information but through overlap with other farms and using some church records I have been able fill out some of the missing links. The further back the records go the more difficult and sparse are the documents.  Good written records in Norway come in with the Christian church about 1000 ad.  The parish priest made a record of baptism, confirmations, marriages, and deaths but not always births.  However, over time, some of these records were destroyed by fire, weather, war, and neglect.  Additionally the priests' handwriting can be very difficult to read and the format was not uniform. You will find that there are multiple births in the same parish with the same name and sometimes on the same farm at the same time. Separating these individual is nearly impossible. The Norwegian government has done a great service to genealogy by putting so many records on the digital archives.- Norway National Archive. Arkivverket .  To make things even more confusing there are also farms of the same name in different parish records and sometimes more than one farm with the same name in the same parish which is identified as being north, east, south, west, big or little.  In some of the older records farms had a suffix "erie" added to the farm name to indicate it was a sub-farm of the main farm such as in TomterieIn more recent days farmers have sold off pieces of land for the building of private homes on lots.  These are now identified as Tomter (with a number) such as Tomter 3 or 4 or more.

Stange (farms listed in the Stangeboka) a few are also listed in Romedalboka, the notation next to the farm number is a reference to Oluf Rygh's book of farm names and using his numbers otherwise the numbers are from the

Vang Gard / Romedal Prestegard

Løten parish is just north and east of Stange and Romedal.  Farms sometimes are listed in both the other farm books.  The municipality of Løten is not far from the rather impressive church and the vicarage and prestegjeld (parish land) is nearby.

Engelhaugen (or Ostre Englaug gard - farm #.    )
I have no known relative here but this is where Edvard Munch was born and lived about the same time as my great grandmother Marianne Oleane Egeberg was born and lived here in 1858 about 2 kilometers away.

Oppland farms,
(now Innlandet administration district now recombining Hedmark and Oppland) a county adjoining and north of Hedmark also had family members in very early history.  In early history Oppland was the northern part of Hedmark. This is a particularly beautiful area of farms following the Gudbradsdalslågen river and its tributaries down to lake Mjøsa.  This history may go back to before the 1300's and perhaps connecting with the lines of Norwegian and Danish royal lines. I have not been able to find a Bygdeboka on Oppland and its broken history makes it difficult to document the families. Here are farms that may give some clue as to this history.
